Before You Begin: Inspect the Glass

This guidance applies to standard window and glass surfaces; because coatings and print/process vary, test a small area for compatibility first. Then inspect: make sure the windows are tight and secure within their moldings and holders, and ask the owner or manager whether a rain repellent, wax, or anti-graffiti agent has ever been applied — those coatings must be stripped in prep, or the graphic won't bond.

  • Orange citrus-based cleaner, degreaser, or high-strength solvent

  • 0000 super-fine steel wool (must be 0000 — nothing coarser)

  • Joy® dish detergent and a bucket of lukewarm water

  • Denatured, isopropyl, or rubbing alcohol

  • Lint-free towels + paper towels

  • Felt-tip or flexible nylon squeegee

  • Masking tape (for hinging), razor/utility knife, and a pin-prick tool for bubbles

  • For full-coverage graphics: 3M 3950 Edge Seal Liquid or 3M 8914 Edge Seal Tape

Part 1 — Prep the Glass (the make-or-break step)

Use the dry method only. BigSigns does not recommend a wet method for window graphics — the dry method lasts longer, avoids a milky-white appearance, and is required for perforated (see-through) film.

Step 1 — Initial clean (strip old chemicals)

Old sealants and coatings have to come off. Strip them using an orange citrus-based cleaner, degreaser, or high-strength cleaning solvent. Many installers use 0000 super-fine steel wool together with the citrus cleaner as a glass-safe scrubbing tool — just be certain it's 0000 super-fine; anything coarser can scratch the glass.

Step 2 — Wash with soap and water

Mix 4 to 6 drops of Joy® detergent into one gallon of lukewarm water. Do not use Windex® or any ammonia-based cleanser, any soap containing lotion, cream, or fragrance, or any automotive soap with glossing agents — all of them leave a film. Wash the window and dry it with a lint-free towel.

Step 3 — Final cleanse with alcohol

Give the glass a final wipe with alcohol (denatured, isopropyl, or rubbing) and dry it with paper or a lint-free towel. Don't let the alcohol air-dry — wipe until every trace of residue is gone. The glass is now ready for the graphic.

Part 2 — Apply the Graphic (Dry Method)

Do not clean with Windex® or any ammonia-based cleaner at any point — ammonia and glossing agents leave residue that blocks adhesion.

1.) Acclimate and check temperature.

Take the graphic out of its packaging, lay it flat, and let it acclimate to the room. Install at 50°F minimum unless the product sheet says otherwise.

2.) Dry-fit for alignment.

Hold the graphic up to the window to check fit and center it. Alignment matters — the dry method allows very little rework once the adhesive touches glass.

3.) Hinge it in place.

Line the graphic up from the side you favor (right-to-left or left-to-right), aligned at the top, without letting the adhesive touch the frame or molding. Apply masking tape across the top on the printed side to lightly tack it into position.

4.) Peel and start the top.

Bend back about 2–6" of the release liner from the top. Align the graphic close to the window, using the top of the frame as your guide.

5.) Squeegee from the center out.

Hold a felt-tip or flexible nylon squeegee in your dominant hand at a slight upward angle, turned slightly from center. Use even, firm strokes from the center-top outward to the edges, then work down in rows, always from the center outward. Never stretch the graphic — vinyl film has memory and will relax later, lifting and failing.

6.) Release the liner as you go.

Don't squeegee onto the release liner. Peel the liner to about three times the squeegee's height ahead of your strokes so you're never tempted to squeegee over it, and keep releasing as you move down.

7.) Trim and final-squeegee.

If the graphic isn't precut to exact size, ease off squeegee pressure near the outer edges, then razor-cut the edges leaving a 1/8"–1/4" border — never run the graphic onto the molding. Squeegee the perimeter again, this time with more pressure along the edges.

8.) Seal full-coverage graphics.

For full-coverage window graphics, apply 3M 3950 Edge Seal Liquid or 3M 8914 Edge Seal Tape around the edges to extend the life of the install.

Weather & Temperature Tips

Cold weather: install mid-day on a sunny, dry day so the glass has time to warm — cold glass fights adhesion. Hot weather: the adhesive grabs harder (higher initial tack), which makes repositioning difficult, so install early morning or in the late evening when it's cooler.

After Installation: Squeegee Marks & Bubbles

A couple of cosmetic things are normal and self-correcting. Squeegee marks may be faintly visible on the adhesive side through the glass — let the owner or manager know they dissipate within 24 to 48 hours. If small air bubbles form, use a pin-prick tool to make a microscopic hole in the bubble, then gently press the air out toward it with your finger.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Cleaning with Windex or ammonia.

It leaves residue that prevents bonding — citrus cleaner, Joy, then alcohol only.

  • Skipping the chemical strip.

Rain repellent, wax, and anti-graffiti coatings must come off first, or the graphic lifts.

  • Stretching the film.

Vinyl has memory; stretched film relaxes and fails. Guide it, don't pull it.

  • Running the graphic to the molding.

Keep a 1/8"–1/4" border; edges on molding lift.

  • Using a wet method.

Not recommended — shorter life, milky look, and wrong for perforated film.

  • Letting alcohol air-dry.

Wipe it off completely; residue blocks adhesion.

  • Installing below 50°F.

Wait for a warmer window or warm the glass first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you install window graphics?

In two stages: prep the glass (strip old coatings with citrus cleaner and 0000 super-fine steel wool, wash with Joy and water, final-wipe with alcohol), then apply the graphic by the dry method — hinge it with tape, peel the liner from the top, and squeegee from the center outward in rows.

Why can't I use Windex to clean the window first?

Windex and other ammonia-based cleaners — plus soaps with lotion, fragrance, or glossing agents — leave a residue that stops the graphic from bonding. Use a citrus cleaner, then Joy and water, then alcohol.

What's the minimum temperature for installing window graphics?

50°F, unless the specific product sheet says otherwise. In cold weather, install mid-day on a sunny day so the glass warms up.

Should I use the wet or dry method?

Dry method only. It lasts longer, avoids a milky-white look, and is required for perforated film. BigSigns does not recommend a wet application for window graphics.

How do I get rid of bubbles and squeegee marks?

Prick small bubbles with a pin tool and press the air out gently with your finger. Faint squeegee marks on the adhesive side dissipate on their own within 24 to 48 hours.

Should the graphic go all the way to the window edge?

No — leave a 1/8" to 1/4" border and never apply the graphic onto the molding, or it will lift and fail prematurely.

What is the 0000 steel wool for?

Used with a citrus cleaner, 0000 super-fine steel wool safely strips old sealants and coatings off the glass. It must be 0000 super-fine — anything coarser can scratch.

How do I make a full-coverage window graphic last longer?

Seal the edges with 3M 3950 Edge Seal Liquid or 3M 8914 Edge Seal Tape after installation.

Can I install window graphics myself?

Yes. The work is mostly patience and prep — strip and clean the glass thoroughly, keep the film from stretching, and squeegee steadily from the center out.
